We have done a great job! We have learned a lot about ourselves this year. The capacity for adaptation and resilience of each one of us: children, adults, elders, has taught us that we can undertake new strategies for growth and even survival. We must recognize and appreciate ourselves for all that, those who are by our side, those who even in the distance and even beyond are always with us.
2020, a year of great surprise, confusion, admiration, change, movement, adaptation, growth at the end of it all. Our best allies and resources have been first our infinite source and our own being, then our spheres of family, friends, co-workers and projects.
We know that 2021 comes with some uncertainties, but at the same time with lessons already learned, with more strengths and enthusiasm and with the strong conviction that we will be able to get ahead, because success is not found at the end of the road but throughout the entire journey. That is our nature, it is our essence, we tend to live, to succeed, to stay, in whatever our special situation is.
I’ve always admired this human ability to get ahead and build. I have seen it in my experience as a psychologist in crisis intervention, when an entire community has been devastated and it is the same community that has imposed reconstruction and finds the resources they need within itself. I have also seen it on a family and individual level, the tendency to life and personal reinvention leads to the need to move on and find the answers. It does not mean that it has not hurt or that there is no memory or even that it has been easy, but the trend, the drive for life and hope prevail.
It is our nature, our best human quality; we want and must follow it.
Talking about recovery on a physical and emotional level is a wonderful task. Our body is designed to heal itself in every way. It gives us opportunities, windows in which we can take advantage of to re-process what is necessary to reach a better level of health. Our brain is our “best” ally, although at times it might seem that it is playing tricks on us or even against us, but the truth is that it only does its job, fulfills its function: keeping us alive, keeping us “afloat”, and in that task he is the best.
Emotional recovery involves several elements, both internal and external, a good combination of them allows us to reach higher levels of emotional well-being. I understood with a good metaphor that even the best neurosurgeon cannot do his own surgery, we all need a “mirror”, a companion. We also need a time, a moment, but above all, our best disposition to move towards it. That is the beginning of good emotional health.
It takes a bit of work to think that we can prevent an emotional crisis, we believe that these simply “happen”; But the truth is that, without a doubt sooner or later we are going to experience some in one way or another, and it is also true that as long as we are prepared we will be able to return to a balanced level of functionality as soon as possible and contain or experience less painful or harmful consequences. And if we can prepare and mitigate in the economic, physical, social areas, it is also true that we can do it on an emotional level.
There are several steps and processes that can be learned and that following our vital impulse towards reconstruction can lead us towards a more balanced emotional health that even helps us achieve our goals and be more successful. Prevention, preparation and intervention are within our reach, it is possible. In each of our scenarios, at the individual and family level who we want to influence. We will meet them one by one in the following editions, they will be a new resource that we will learn and use in our favor, because that is our nature, we tend to grow, improve and make those around us grow and improve. That is the essence of our existence.
With all the faith and hope that our human society possesses, I wish that we have a new year full of blessings and learning. May we be HAPPY, let us remember that “human happiness is a disposition of the mind and not a condition of circumstances” John Locke (1632-1704)
